Keep your resolutions… and grow your network marketing profits

How many of us wake up on January 1st bound and determined to turn over a new leaf? So, how long does this fervor last? How many people are still at it a week later? Sadly, my best guess is that only a few people make it much more than a week. Why does this happen? Why do we lose our fervor and revert to our old ways so quickly?

One word: homeostasis.

Your body and mind are designed for sameness. Humans love stability in everything from our body temperature and heart rates to our habits. Change, no matter how welcome or how badly needed, is calamitous. You’ve probably had at least one major change in your life and it was probably one of the most stressful changes you’ve ever experienced. People don’t like change and our subconscious minds will do everything in their power to maintain the status quo no matter how awful it is. Make some radical change, such as a new resolution, and your body will immediately try to undermine you. You may have no idea how you’re undermining to yourself until it’s too late. This is no accident. Your body and brain are constantly working to keep you (the homo sapiens) in a static set of circumstances (stasis), which is where the word “homeostasis” comes from.

How can you override your instincts and successfully make changes in your life? It’s as easy as 1-2-3-4:

The first step is to define your goal right down to every little detail.

Second, define easy steps that you can take each week to maintain and grow your home-based business. Having done that, forget everything but the current week’s step. Next week isn’t here yet, so worrying about that step is pointless. Last week is done and gone. Focus solely on this week. Do you see what you’ve done? Your huge lofty goal has just become manageable in a way that lets you see results very quickly.

The third step is to take the actions you need to take for that week.

Finally, decide in advance how you’re going to reward yourself for achieving your week’s milestone. This reward need not be costly or complicated. It must, however, be creative and meaningful to you on more than a superficial level.

Life is a one-way journey. Why not enjoy it? The four-step system I just described can have you achieving more with more joy and less effort than ever before, because you are rewarding yourself for doing well instead of punishing yourself for not doing well. Thus subtle change is extremely powerful.

You can apply this process any way you like. Want to start a new home-based business? Grow your existing home-based business? Lose weight? Hire additional help? Get a professional certification or degree? Prepare and file your taxes? You can do it, and this process can help because it tricks the mind in to thinking that things are remaining stable when tremendous changes might in fact be happening. Dive into a pool and your entire body will feel the shock. Go in slowly and you’ll hardly notice the cold. The same logic applies to this four-step process.

What do you want to accomplish this year? I’m certainly not suggesting that you stop making New Year’s resolutions. I am suggesting that you take a little time to help guarantee your success. And why not? Don’t you deserve to succeed?

Be good to yourself and your life and home-based business will be very good to you. Follow this four-step process and you will accomplish more in less time and with more joy than you ever dreamed possible. That’s a promise.
